The Webcomic List Awards 2010

The nominees for the Webcomic List Awards 2010 have been posted, and I thought I'd take some time to give my opinions. This is a peer nominated and judged award, so there's no way I could actually have any say in this, but I'm going to list who I would've nominated anyway...

ETA: Winners have been announced, and are marked with a *. I've also updated my master list of webcomics.

Bold for ones I follow, strikethrough for ones I don't, italics for adding to my folder of webcomics to look at later (my main reason for paying attention to these awards in the first place), italic strikethrough if I've never heard of it before and it's obviously not my kind of thing. All comics sorted alphabetically within each category.

-Best Writing-

Bug
Oglaf (NSFW)
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
Sinfest
* xkcd *

I read webcomics for primarily for the writing. I want them to have complex characters, consistent worldbuilding, and a story that isn't searching for the lowest common denominator. So I was really disappointed to see that the "Writing" category had the exact same set of nominees as "Gag-a-day". Do moments of brilliance really outweigh months of mere greatness?

My nominees:
Digger, Family Man, Girl Genius, Lackadaisy, Spacetrawler

-Best New Comic-

Axe Cop
Minor Acts of Heroism
Red's Planet
* Scenes from a Multiverse *

Comics recommended to me generally sit in my bookmark folder for several months until I have time and interest to look at them. And I don't look at comics that have fewer than 30 pages, so I'm rather surprised I actually had more than five eligible comics in this category.

My nominees:
Clockworks, Delve into Fantasy, Genocide Man, Interstellar Tea House, Spacetrawler

-Best Colour Art-

* Dresden Codak *
Hanna is not a Boy's Name
The Meek
Oglaf (NSFW)

I don't really pay much attention to the art.

My nominees:
The Dreamer, Everblue, Girl Genius, The Meek, Shadowgirls

-Best Black and White Art-

* The Abominable Charles Christopher *
Lackadaisy
Sandra and Woo

Still not paying attention to the art.

My nominees:
Digger, Family Man, Galaxion, Haru-Sari, Lackadaisy

-Best Non-traditional Art-

Dreamland Chronicles
* Romantically Apocalyptic *
A Softer World
Union of Heroes

I'm not entirely sure where to draw the line here, and the only photographic comic I follow didn't update in 2010 (Dark Red).

My nominees:
Blip, Crimson Dark, Darths and Droids, Hyperbole and a Half, The Pale

-Best Gag-a-day-

* Bug *
Oglaf (NSFW)
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
Sinfest
xkcd

There's only one comic I follow that isn't longform, so I'm going to stretch the definition to include ones that try to be funny with every update.

My nominees:
Flaky Pastry, Freefall, Order of the Stick, Skin Horse, xkcd

-Best Longform Comic-

* The Abominable Charles Christopher *
Girl Genius
Gunnerkrigg Court
The Meek
Questionable Content

No surprise that this is the only category where I like most of the nominees.

My nominees:
Digger, Flipside, A Girl and Her Fed, Girl Genius, Gunnerkrigg Court

-Best Character-

Axe Cop from Axe Cop
* Cleo from Cleopatra in Spaaaace! *
Alan Warren from The Dreamer
Antimony Carver from Gunnerkrigg Court
Hanna from Hanna is not a Boy's Name
Zombie from Hanna is not a Boy's Name
Imy from Imy

My nominees:
Ed from Digger, Dr. McNinja from Dr. McNinja, Florence Ambrose from Freefall, Axel Higgs from Girl Genius, Roza from Roza

-Best Comic 2010-

FreakAngels
Gunnerkrigg Court
The Meek
Questionable Content
* Red's Planet *

My nominees:
Digger, Girl Genius, Lackadaisy, Order of the Stick, Skin Horse

So 1 winner I like, 2 I don't, and 6 I've never heard of.

All I need: more timesinks, be they ever so enjoyable.

In Esperanto, the same word, distro, means -- no, not "distribution", you anglophone geeks! -- both "entertainment" and "distraction".
